Class Notes
**Dr. John K. Estell (Eng ’84) received the 2019 Distinguished Service Award from the First-Year Programs Division of the American Society for Engineering Education. The award is given annually in recognition of meritorious contributions to the division and its objectives over the past several years. Estell served as the division’s chair in 2017-18, as its program chair in 2016-17 and as a member-at-large of the division’s executive committee from 2014 to 2016.

*Dr. Carl E. Kramer (PhD ’80) is the 2019 recipient of the Captain Donald T. Wright Award for Maritime Journalism. The award honors Kramer’s book “Rivers of Time: A History of American Commercial Lines, 1915-2015.” He is the founder of Kramer Associates Inc., a Jeffersonville, Ind. historical consulting firm, which he co-owns with his wife, Mary Kagin Kramer. Kramer is a retired adjunct assistant professor of history and the founding director of the Institute for Local and Oral History at Indiana University Southeast in New Albany, where he taught for 35 years.

Mark O’Hala (Bus ’88) was named CEO of Prisma Health, a South Carolina health system. He served as the executive vice president and chief operating officer for McLaren Health Care since 2014.

Joan R. M. Bullock (Law ’83) has been named the dean of Texas Southern University Thurgood Marshall School of Law. Her responsibilities will include leading and managing law school operations, advancing a vision for the school’s future, fundraising, and building and sustaining partnerships and strong relationships with alumni of the law school and University.

Steve DeBolt (MA ’87) was hired by the village of Hebron, Ohio as its village administrator.
*Vince DiPofi (Eng ’85) was promoted to president and CEO of SSOE Group in Toledo, a global A/E and construction management firm. DiPofi has been with SSOE since 2000 and previously served as the company’s chief operating officer and executive vice president. He is a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers and has been a registered Professional Engineer in Ohio and Michigan since 1990.

Kenetta Kay Jones (Bus ’94) is the human resources director at the Rudolph Libbe Group and has been named HR Professional of 2019 by the Northwest Ohio Human Resources Association. The award recognizes human resources professionals who have made a significant impact in their organizations and local communities in northwest Ohio. The Rudolph Libbe Group provides construction and facility services, such as site selection and construction, energy solutions and ongoing facility management.

*Angela Schaal (Ed ’99) is the executive director of teaching and learning for the Bowling Green, Ohio school system.

Dr. Greg Rawski (MBA ’99, PhD ’05) was selected to serve as dean of the Byrun School of Business at Marian University in Indianapolis.
Dustin Warren (Univ Coll ’97) is the automotive refinish sales team senior account manager for Global Finishing Solutions. In his new role, Warren will support existing national account customers while working to bring time and money saving products and services to more body shops and collision repair centers nationwide.

Tim Hall (Univ Coll ’94) was named the eighth athletic director at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill.

David Miller (Ed ’94) is the new athletic director at Mansfield St. Peter’s High School in Mansfield, Ohio. Miller has been teaching for 25 years, the last five of which have been at St. Peter’s Elementary School.
Dexter A. Bailey Jr. (MBA ’94) has been appointed Caltech’s vice president for advancement and alumni relations. In this new role, Bailey will serve on the president’s leadership team for the institute and as Caltech’s primary development leader. Caltech is located in Pasadena, Calif.

Dr. Shabier Raffee (MED ’07) joined the medical staff at McLaren Flint as a board certified internist. His practice is located in Flint, Mich.

Dr. Andrew Henley (Ed ’04) was selected to be the deputy director of the Alabama State Arts Council. He previously served as the curator of education and community engagement at the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, Wash., since 2016.

Harvey Hyman (Law ’09) was among 21 Ohio attorneys who graduated from the Ohio State Bar Association 201 leadership academy. Hyman is an attorney at Hyman & Hyman Ltd., where he focuses his practice in the areas of estate planning, probate, real estate, civil litigation, bankruptcy and criminal defense. The leadership academy is limited to 24 lawyers annually who have practiced law between one and 10 years. The academy chooses attorneys committed to its goals, including diversity, and who have a demonstrated history of interaction with the legal and civic communities.

*Bret Babcock (Bus ’10, Honors ’10) was appointed chief operating officer of LOGICFORCE, a Nashville-based legal IT consultancy. Babcock previously served as the company’s chief financial officer. He will retain the CFO title and responsibilities with his new position.

Dr. Babatunde Almaroof (RES ’10), a board certified vascular surgeon, joined the medical staff at McLaren Flint. His practice is located in Flint, Mich.

*Liza Mockeridge (Ed Spec ’16) is the new assistant principal of Farmington High School in Farmington, Mich.

Dr. Matthew Brown (RES ’18) joined the staff of Northwest Radiology Network in Indianapolis as a nuclear medicine radiologist.
Births and Marriages
**Donovan T. Nichols (A/S ’04, Honors ’04, MEd ’06) and his wife, Alycia Nichols, welcomed their first child, Sawyer Van Nichols on August 20, 2019. Sawyer is already a UToledo fan and has been sporting Rocket gear since birth. Donovan is the assistant dean for student involvement and leadership at The University of Toledo, and Alycia is the vice president of mortgage lending at TLC Community Credit Union.

Gary Swailes (UTCTC ’68) and Alice Swailes celebrated 50 years of marriage on June 20, 2019. They were married at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Toledo. The Swailes are currently the owners of G.A.S. Art and Framing and also participate in many activities sponsored by the Licking County Aging Program.

**Alyce Segall (Ed ’69) and **Stewart Segall (Bus ’68) recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary by taking a cruise around Cape Horn, Chile.
Weslie Detwiler (Comm/Arts ’14, Honors ’14) and Michael Broderick were married on Aug. 3, 2019 at Varian Orchards in East Canton, Ohio. Weslie is a visual art instructor at SMARTS in Youngstown, Ohio, and Michael is a refinishing technician at American Wheel Repair in Canfield, Ohio.

**Jean Bleasdale (att. 1959), Sylvania, Ohio, 80.

Kymberly A. Bauder-Callis, Toledo, 57. She was a nurse at MCO/MUO in 2004 and 2005.

Phillip L. Marquart (MBA ’64), Sandusky, Ohio, 84. He was an adjunct instructor who taught business classes at the University.

Robert W. Preston, Oak Harbor, Ohio, 81. He was a volunteer with the Satellites Auxiliary.

Lonnie Lee Hill, Toledo, 80. He was a custodial worker at the University from 1992 until his retirement in 2002.

Ruth E. Jones, Toledo, 80. She was a laundry technician at MCO who retired in 1990.

Charles F. “Denne” Pease, Toledo, 83. He joined the University in 1964 as an oboe instructor. Pease played with the Faculty Woodwind Quintet and the Toledo Woodwind Trio. In addition, he was the principal oboist with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra from 1962 to 1985, and performed with the Toledo Opera and Music Under the Stars.

Marjorie (McLean) Szor (MA ’72), Toledo, 88. She was a nursing instructor in the Community and Technical College. From 1988 to 1998, Szor was a clinical nurse specialist at MCO.
